Compound Words

 

A compound word is made up of 2 separate words. The two words are joined together to make a new word.

Using comma’s to separate items in a list

,

 

Commas are one of the most commonly used punctuation marks in English.

A comma tells a reader to take a short pause when they are reading but not as long as a full stop.

 

A list is a collection of items, words or phrases.

We might write a shopping list or maybe even a list about what we can see.

Sometimes we can use ‘and’ too many times. Using a comma instead can make our sentence more exciting to read.

Forming nouns using -er

 

What is a verb and what is a noun?

Verb – is an action or ‘doing’ word.

Noun – the name of something or someone.

 

Look at the words below, some are nouns and some are verbs. Can you sort them out?

 

driver               swim         climb        teacher

Look at these words. Can you see how adding –er changes them from a verb into a noun?

 

Verb             Noun

teach                teacher

drive                 driver

sing                  singer

paint                 painter

 

When we change verbs into nouns, most of the time we can just add –er.

 

learn + er = learner

walk + er = walker

play + er = player

 

Sometimes it is trickier!

 

When the word ends in an ‘e’, we knock off the ‘e’ before adding –er:

 

drive -> driv + er = driver

write – writ + er = writer

 

When the verb ends in a consonant and the letter ‘y’, we need to change the ‘y’ into an ‘I’ then add –er.

 

Carry -> carri + er = carrier

Worry -> worri + er = worrier

 

When a verb ends in a vowel and one consonant, we need to double the last consonant to keep the vowel sound short.

 

Swim -> swim + er = swimmer

Job -> jog + er = jogger

LI: to show a fraction of an amount 

 

Today we are going to be looking at fractions. You will need some colouring pencils to help you complete the activities. 

 

TOP tips to help you; -

A fraction is a part of a whole.

Each part must be of an equal amount.

e.g. 2/3 = 2 out of 3 parts would be shaded in.

Writing and Identifying statements and exclamation

Do you remember the 4 types of sentences we use?

 

Questions – How much does it cost?

Statements – The car is green.

Commands – Let me drive your car.

Exclamations – What a shiny new car you have!

 

Today we are concentrating on statements and exclamations!

 

Statements:

  • Statements are the most common type of sentence.
  • Statements give information or ‘state’ things.
  • They can be very simple or more complicated.
  • They begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
  • All of the sentences on this page, including this one, are statements.

 

Examples

Danyal’s favourite food is pizza.

It is 7 o’clock.

I live next door to Elise.

When I have chips, I like to soak them in vinegar and sprinkle them with salt.

 

Exclamations:

  • An exclamation ‘states’ something just like a statement but with strong feeling or emotion.
  • It ends with an exclamation mark.
  • It can be used to express anger, happiness, confusion, love, excitement.
  • An exclamation sentence must start with 'what' or 'how' and needs a verb and a noun.

 

Examples

How greedy of Bob to eat Sita’s cake!

How terrifying this ghost story is!

What an enormous turnip you have!

What a fantastic film we just watched!
