Maths at work

Actress -  Suzy Wilson (Year 2)

As part of a year 2 Wow visit, the children were visited by 'Florence Nightingale'. As part of her visit she was asked a variety of maths questions by our maths ambassador (AJ). In the interview she told us the importance of maths.

  • Maths is a skill that she needs to use on a daily basis.
  • Some of the main areas of maths that she uses are time, measure, data, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • One example of when she uses maths is when she has to sort her accounts; making sure the bills are paid, including her VAT. She also has to calculate time and distance every day to make sure she arrives at each school at the right time.
  • Without maths, she would not make any money and therefore couldn't do her job.

Author - Helen Moss (Year 3)

We are an incredibly lucky school to have a patron of reading - Helen Moss has worked closely with our school and fully immersing us in the world of story telling. However, it may come as a surprise to some people that even authors need maths. How? Well the answer is simple...maths is everywhere!

Our year 3 maths ambassador (Cameron) interviewed Helen and she was kind enough to share some of the ways maths impacts on her every day life.

  • Some of the key areas of maths that Helen needs is time, measure, data and all 4 of the operations (+ - x ÷)
  • Helen is having to calculate the word counts in her books to make sure they are long enough and challenging enough for her readers.
  • Her job requires her to handle money and ensure she has enough to pay her bills, VAT and tax.
  • Working with schools means she has to calculate time and distance to make sure she arrives on time and can work with the children.
  • If Helen was not an author, her dream maths job would be an accountant.

We love working with Helen and she has demonstrated once again the importance of learning within school and demonstrated once more that the world of maths is everywhere. Thank you Helen.

Barclays Digital Eagle Team Leader - Kevin Gamer

 

Kevin sees maths as something he uses on a daily basis, not just in his job but in everyday life. Working for a company like Barclays, means you have to be good with numbers. His role at the company means he has to monitor how many people are using their website, analysing data and making sure there are enough staff to help their customers.

One other job Kevin would like to do if he wasn't a Digital Eagle member is to be an astronaut as he feels they require a whole range of maths skills in order to push the boundaries.

Community Dance Artist - Paul Doyle

Paul is a talented dance instructor from MID (Merseyside Dance Initiative), who came to visit our year 6 pupils this year to look at different dance styles over the last century.

 

Maths has played an essential role in him being able to deliver such an engaging project to the local community. Dance requires the ability to count beats, follow multiple instructions using positional language and move at different speeds to create a certain type of genre.

 

Dance can be a solo performance, a duet or even a group event and for it to be as effective and powerful as possible, maths plays a vital role. Each person has a role to be in sync with the rest of the group, ensuring they can maintain rhythm, position, shape and speed. All of these qualities come from a physical form of maths and enables a dancer to strike certain emotions on the person watching.

Doctor - Stacy Todd

 

Dr Todd is a specialist in 'Infectious diseases' and requires maths on a daily basis. There is not one area of maths that she does not use. In order to keep her patients safe and well, she has to calculate the right dosage (amount of medicine) to give them.

 

Maths allows Dr Todd to understand infections: how they spread; who gets them and how to treat them. Without maths, she would not be able to keep her patients safe and identify new medicines to cure a wider range of diseases.

Events organiser (In Harmony Liverpool) - Rosie Eade

 

Even though Miss Eade does an absolutely fantastic job as our 'Wow visitor / visits' organiser, she also has another job. She is also the 'In Harmony Liverpool' assistant - supporting the musical development at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

 

She uses maths on a daily basis in her role, including algebra, data analysis, time and measure. One of her main maths skills is being able to gather data on all the instruments they use and organise it using her excel spreadsheet.

 

Without maths she wouldn't be able to do her job as her whole tracking system relies on using number.

Firefighter - Gary Spain (Watch Manager)

 

On Tuesday 18th October, Gary and his crew of firefighters came to visit all of the children during a special whole school assembly. Gary gave a whole range of essential tips and advice on how to stay safe over half term, especially with bomb fire night in just a few weeks.

 

After the assembly, Gary was able to share some of the interesting ways maths helps to save so many lives and keep everyone in the community safe. Here are just a few examples of how a firefighter uses maths: -

  • Breathing Apparatus Entry Control Officer (BAECO): Every firefighter is a trained BAECO. When a firefighter goes into a fire, they have to wear their breathing apparatus, this give them oxygen to breathe. The air is kept inside a large cylinder on their back (Anything between 250-300 bar contents). It is the job of the BAECO to calculate how long your oxygen will last and when a firefighter must leave the incident.
  • Diameter of the nozzle  on the hose: Depending on the size of the room, the firefighter must choose the correct type of hose. They can choose from a 21mm, 52mm and 70mm diameter.
  • Statistics: Every time a fire engine is called to a fire, there is a whole team who have to make sure that everywhere else in the city is safe. It is like a big game of musical chairs! By doing this, they can always ensure a fast response time if there was ever more than one fire.
  • Data handling: All fires are recorded by the firefighters and sent to an analysis team. If they can ever spot a pattern (for example a lot of kitchen fires in a certain neighbourhood) then they will go and deliver leaflets or speak to neighbours to try and prevent future fires, rather than just putting them out.

 

Who knew maths played such a vital role to keeping us all safe? A huge thank you to Gary for taking the time to come and speak to the children but for also sharing all of the maths he uses within his job.

Hairdresser - Michelle

 

Michelle is a qualified teacher in hairdressing and was more than happy to share the variety of maths she uses to do her job on a day to day basis: -

  • Length: Getting the length right for the customer is very important, if you cut it too short or too long, your customer will not be very happy.
  • Angles: It is very important that you cut the hair at the right angle, depending on the shape of the hair and which part you are cutting, you may hold the hair at a 45 degree, 90 degree or even a 180 degree angle.
  • Ratio: When making hair dye and getting the right colour for the customer, you have to put the right amount of hair dye (grams) to the right amount of hydrogen peroxide.  You don't want to get this wrong, no would be happy if they paid for blonde hair and it ended up looking green!
  • Money: This part is incredibly important, if you get this wrong, you would end up losing money, rather than making any. Each haircut is a different price, depending on the skills required, the products required and how long it would take to do it. You should be looking to make a 25% profit on each haircut in order to be a successful hairdresser.
  • Time: Nothing upsets customers more than being late for an appointment. It is my job to make sure I fit the right amount of customers into my day and ensure I can give the customer a quality haircut and leave myself enough time to get to my next customer.

Without maths I would not be able to do the job that I love, it plays an integral part to all jobs but it is essential in mine.

ICT manager - Mr Hughes

We are incredibly lucky to have such a wide range of technology in our school and a big part of that is down to Mr Hughes - our ICT manager.

- He has to use maths on a daily basis, especially data handling as he has to make sure the equipment is available for the classes to use.

- He also needs good time management as he needs to ensure the equipment is in the right place at the right time.

-Estimation is important as we all hate it when the battery life runs low on our iPads, so Mr Hughes has to charge them up when he thinks they may run out.

 

His job would not be possible without maths as the machines would stop working, we wouldn't be able to buy any new equipment and the technology would never arrive to our class on time.

Make up artist - Miss Taylor

 

Miss Taylor joined our school this year as year 3's teaching assistant but who knew that she had a previous career? Before coming to Kensington primary, Miss Taylor was a make up artist.

 

Miss Taylor said she used maths on a daily basis. Some of the main examples were time, measure, calculations and fractions/decimals/percentages. Her whole job depended on her being able to get to her appointments on time, her equipment required her to put the right ratio of products on the customer and estimation to ensure she wasn't late to her next appointment.

Martial Arts Teacher - Liverpool Hung Gar Kung Fu company

 

Martial arts is a skill that takes time, patience and dedication to learn. Every year the Liverpool Hung Gar company pay our school a visit to share their fantastic Chinese New Year celebration performance.

 

In such a practical and demanding event, maths still plays an important role - measure is required in the force you use and positioning within a team, angles enable the performers to create a certain movement within the show and positional language enables them to put on such an entertaining performance.

 

Being able to share these performances with schools also requires maths, as the group has to calculate cost for fuel, distance to find the locations and time to ensure they don't miss the show.

Maths Link Governor - Mrs Mason

 

We are incredibly lucky at Kensington to have a maths governor who loves maths just as much as we do. Alongside her role as our 'maths link governor', she creates the examination questions for exams all the way up to GCSE level (year 11).

 

Maths is a daily skills for Mrs Mason, as she uses all areas to plan and design questions to challenge and support children's learning. Her maths skills help her set targets and ensure they are met.

 

Mrs Mason believes that maths is a skill we can always develop and improve upon and the more we work at it, the more it grows. She also feels with the right attitude then we can always work towards the job that we want. Mrs Mason's dream maths job would be a weather forecaster.

Musician - Mr Waldemar

 

Our school fully supports the development of future musicians and we are incredibly lucky to have a specialist musician teacher come into school every Thursday. This week, our maths ambassadors paid him a visit to ask him how he uses maths in his job.

 

Maths is a daily skill, that has an incredibly strong link to music. One of the main areas for a musician is timing. Without it, a musician can not get the tempo or rhythm correct. If the musician is preforming a duet or within an orchestra this can dramatically impact on the sound of the music.

 

If Mr Valdemar was not a music teacher, he would like to be a tour guide, where he would use his positional language to explore lots of exotic places around the world.

Spanish Teacher - Ms Frauco

 

At Kensington primary, we are very lucky to have a Spanish teacher who visits every Key Stage 2 class to support their learning of Spanish. Our year 4 maths ambassador paid her a visit to ask how maths impacts on her job.

 

Her main areas of maths in her job is numbers, data and time. Counting in Spanish is the starting point for anyone learning Spanish, leading on to counting in 2's, 5's, 10's and even 100's.

 

Because Ms Frauco works in a variety of schools, she must be sure to be on time otherwise children would miss their Spanish lesson. Ms Frausco felt that if you didn't have maths skills, you wouldn't be able to do her job because 'it is essential to everyday learning'.

Teacher - Mrs Oulton

 

Mrs Oulton has been using maths throughout her teaching career - both in delivering her lessons but also to complete the other roles in her job. Her daily routine is all based around good maths skills, she has to be in school on time, prepare lessons but also ensure the class are in the right place at the right time (no one wants to be the last class to assembly).

 

Throughout teaching new strategies are introduced for maths and being a good teacher means being able to adapt to these new approaches, offering new ways to learn.

Wages admin - Claire Hynes

 

A big part of a job is being paid and without Claire Hynes, the staff at Tesco would not get paid for their work. She is in charge of making sure every worker gets paid the right amount of money. To do this, she must calculate a workers hourly wage and multiply it by the number of hours they work.

 

She says "My role is very important to all our Tesco workers, as people rely on their wages to pay for their food, bills and life! If I get it wrong, it could cause a lot of problems so I take great care and pride in the job I do."

Waste Awareness Officer - Kirsty Martin

 

Being able to promote a healthy environment and offering advice on building a positive community. Maths is important when working with the community as you have to keep track of the number of people you have spoken to, including the percentage of adults and children. The location of the visitors is also tracked to support the funding of their job and to ensure Kirsty can continue to make a positive contribution.
