In Early Years we explore mathematics in lots of different ways. We follow the children's interests and we weave mathematical learning through all of our topics.
Maths is everywhere, Spring 2.
problem solving superhero style
how many bones are in your hand?
"I need to cut them small because I need lots"
measuring to fit
which number flame did you put out?
trying to make it long enough to put out the fire
which was the fastest? which came second?
Matmatics during child led play
"My monster has 10 eyes!"
Sharing the cars equally
ICT and Mathmatics
'I'm making dinner for three friends"
Outdoor maths during child led play
"Look number 10, 20, 30... what's that number?"
"I have scored 9, one more and I have 10 goals!"
"I have made a cuboid"
Shape, Space and Measures during child led play
Filling the bowl "full" with porridge!
"I have used the shapes to make an iceskater"
The children ordered their shoes before PE
"Your tower is taller, I need more!"
This half term we have explored the theme of Winter and have explored geography and science, as well as mathematics and English through this topic. We have also looked at Chinese culture as we explored Chinese New Year. This is a great way to develop our understanding of ordinal numbers as we think about the story explaining the Chinese New Year race. We have been experimenting with shape as we used junk modelling to build a dragon, what shapes are the best to make a horn, ears or eyes? This has also given us the chance to explore music, counting the beat of the drums as the dragon dances and repeating patterns of sound.

Chinese New Year music
We have been trying to follow the pattern of music to make the dragon dance. We counted the beats as we played, "1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4"
