When My Ship Came In by Alan Gibbons
As part of our Oracy unit, we used a range images from this book to create our own storyboard. Using a range of sentence types we came up with our very own stories based on the characters Eddie and Ben, who lived near the Liverpool Docks during the Victorian Era.
Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo

Evacuated from London, David and Tucky feel like the war is a long way away from their new life in the Devon countryside. Then one night the skyline of the moor is lit up with gun flashes, and the distant crump of bombing miles away brings the war back to them and shatters their new-found peace.

Everyone in Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed reading this high quality text, the children used their inference and deduction skills to deepen their understanding of the text, and we made links to our History topic WW2. To end our unit of work the children wrote their own chapter in the style of Michael Morpurgo.

Oranges in No Man's Land by Elizabeth Laird
Since her father left Lebanon to find work and her mother tragically died in a shell attack, ten-year-old Ayesha has been living in the bomb-ravaged city of Beirut with her granny and her two younger brothers. The city has been torn in half by civil war and a desolate, dangerous no mans land divides the two sides. Only militiamen and tanks dare enter this deadly zone, but when Granny falls desperately ill Ayesha sets off on a terrifying journey across no mans land to reach a doctor living in enemy territory.
